UQ marketing and communications news

December 2018

Calling all aspiring models

As part of the brand refresh, OMC is supplementing UQ Images with new stock photos that meet the tier two photography guidelines.

So far, OMC has conducted three all-day photoshoots capturing general student life at UQ St Lucia, with more targeted shoots planned for the new year.

With only a couple of weeks left of the year, and students either on holidays or about to graduate, we thought it would be a good time to schedule in a professional staff photoshoot, given our current professional staff stock images are now five years old.

Therefore, OMC is seeking expressions of interest from staff who have availability during the next two weeks to participate in a two to three hour-long photoshoot.

If you are interested, but unable to participate, please still register your interest as we may need to postpone to early next year if we don’t receive enough interest.

The photos will mostly capture staff at St Lucia – having lunch, having coffee, in meetings, attending professional development courses and hopefully also some shots of staff conducting security and P&F activities.

In the new year there will be a teaching and learning / academic focused shoot as this will need a combination of academic staff and students.

To register your interest for the shoot, email uqimages@uq.edu.au.

UQmedicine magazine out now

The latest edition of UQmedicine is full of exciting stories from the medical community – from a fire twirling cancer researcher and developments in the fight against superbugs, to student rotations in Haiti.

This edition also includes information on the upcoming refurbishment of Herston’s Mayne Medical Building.

Contact Kate Zischke to request any promotional resources.

UQ graduations kicks off

Today marks the start of the ‘grads season’ for UQ, with eight days of celebrations to send our finest young minds into the future.

Since The University of Queensland’s first graduation ceremony for two women and three men 105 years ago, the University has conferred degrees on more than 264,000 graduates – including more than 14,000 PhDs.

One of this year's Valedictorians, Kiri Rogan, has written a blog post about her personal journey from Coffs Harbour to UQ, via Saskatchewan, Canada.

UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said that graduations are the highlight of the academic year, and a pivotal point in the lives of our students.

Graduates will leave UQ with the resilience to manage the uncertainties ahead as new technology and innovation lead to entirely new career paths.

Twice a year OMC looks for unique and interesting graduation stories, and it's never too early to start giving it some thought for 2019.

Contact communications@uq.edu.au or contactmagazine@uq.edu.au to discuss any story ideas for future graduations.

Update on the brand project

What’s new on the brand site?

  • Email banners – the UQ lockup has been added as an option for email signatures
  • Email templates – resources and instructions are now available for the creation of EDM templates, including HTML files and quick reference guides. Please note that we are continuing to liaise with Vision6 on a wider solution for that platform.
  • Video – templates for transitions, supers, end plate and opening device tag have been added, along with video guidelines and a motion graphics user guide
  • Social media – guidelines have been added to the social media toolkit.

We also promised the templates for academic posters and non-award certificates were imminent. The non-award certificate template should be uploaded to the site shortly, and the academic posters are in a testing phase.

Brand guidelines version 2

We are working through updates to the brand guidelines and hope to release version two in December or January. These will incorporate the video guidelines and social media guidelines that have also been released as standalone documents on the brand site.

Photography

Three photo shoots have been completed since the launch in October. These have focused on tier two (UQ life) shots. We are working through final selects and retouching and the images should be available on UQ Images some time in January. Photography will resume in February / March when students are back on campus, and it will include a shoot at Gatton.

UQ Images

We are auditing the images already on UQ Images and creating a set of images that meet the new photography guidelines. As a result you may have noticed that a lot of the newer high-quality images have 'disappeared'. You can access these images by changing your filter option from "Active" to "Brand" in the "Current filter" drop-down option in the far left column. This process will be finalised by the end of January, but in the meantime you may need to search for images in both active and brand, because UQ Images unfortunately lacks the functionality for images to appear in two filters.

Brand emails

Please note that the brand email address will not be monitored in the period 2–4 January 2019, and there will be a delayed response to enquiries in the fortnight commencing 7 January as the brand team returns from leave. We will include an auto reply on the brand emails to remind enquirers about this.

2018 OP Results Advice campaign summary

UQ’s OP Results Advice event will be held on Monday 17 December, two days after OP results are released.

The event is primarily aimed at school leavers who have questions about their tertiary study options after receiving their OP result. They can speak to UQ staff to obtain advice and inform their final QTAC preferences before the major offer round in January.

This year’s event has slightly different hours to previous years with the event running from 3–6pm.

In addition to the Study Area stands, attendees will have the opportunity to sit with a student. This addition to the event provides an invaluable opportunity to chat with a current student and discover UQ from a student’s perspective.

The campaign to promote the event launched on Monday 26 November, with advertising appearing in the local SEQ market across print, radio, social and digital.

If you have any questions, please visit the campaign microsite or contact marketing@uq.edu.au.

The Summer 2018 edition of Contact magazine is out now

Read about how a design graduate went from UQ to the set of Game of Thrones, set sail with one of Australia’s oldest and most respected shipbuilders, or learn from an international lawyer about what it’s like to defend some of the world’s most polarising figures.

Contact also takes you to UQ’s Heron Island Research Station and the jungles of Borneo to highlight the many experiences available to UQ students.

Any help with promoting these stories is much appreciated.

The Contact team is also seeking story ideas for 2019. To pitch a story, email contactmagazine@uq.edu.au or phone Michael Jones on 336 59723.

UQ Written Style Guide

The online guide to written style at UQ is an authoritative guide for staff when writing any internal or external communications and marketing materials across all print and digital media.

To ensure the guide remains current, usable and relevant, a working group of staff members from units across UQ meets regularly to discuss style issues and queries that arise in their day-to-day work.

If you are interested in joining the working group, email the Publications team – new members are encouraged.
